Sick days
You'll need to take special care of yourself when you are sick. Being sick may cause stress, which can make it harder for your body to regulate your blood sugar levels. You may need more medicine when you are sick. Ask your diabetes care team in advance whom you should call when you are sick, and call that person right away if you become ill.
Here are some other tips that will help until you’re feeling better again:
Check your blood sugar often
Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, check your blood sugar and ketone levels every three to four hours when you are sick. Your diabetes care team will ask you about your levels during the time that you have been sick.
Drink plenty of fluids
Water is best, but tea (without milk, sugar, or honey) or a diet soft drink is okay, too.
Try to eat something
Try to eat your normal meals. If your stomach is upset, try to eat some toast or soup.
