Voices of Diabetes

Since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago, I was finding it very difficult to follow my plan and get good results on my once-daily blood glucose monitoring. Though only 52, I was disabled due to a spinal problem, so I was home all day and the nibbles would get to me. I decided I needed to test more than once a day, just to keep myself on track. If my blood sugar was too high, it brought me right back to proper eating habits.

My disability made me eligible for Medicare healthcare benefits. When I was running low on the supplies my doctor had given me, my testing equipment finally arrived from a company that does business for Medicare-eligible diabetics. I was given enough supplies to test only once a day. This is what Medicare covers for people with type 2 diabetes. I asked my doctor for advice. He wrote to Medicare that I must test 3 times a day.

I think EVERY person with EITHER type of diabetes should test as often as they can. With my close monitoring of my diabetes I was able to customize my diet for my needs. Testing more frequently than once a day has also helped to get my A1C score to 5.9!!

Testing often is essential to getting and keeping your blood sugar as close to normal as you can get it. This will surely help to reduce the chance of diabetes-related health problems.
