Voices of Diabetes

I have been a diabetic for 18 years.  I started out with healthy eating and exercise, then a pill, and then insulin. I was taking multiple injections a day. Then I had a hysterectomy and gained 125 lbs. I was at my heaviest at 377 lbs. I have since lost 145 lbs. and still need to lose another 60 lbs. to get to my goal weight.

I now am taking daily pills and only occasionally take insulin. I am doing better, but every day is a new and different challenge. I know that diabetes is mine for life, and I have gotten used to testing twice a day.

I keep reminding my family to have their blood tested for high blood sugar (glucose) all the time, since for me, this disease came out of nowhere.  I am the youngest of 5 and the first to get both cancer and diabetes.  It is a tough road, and every day has its challenges. However, this is one I am determined to work with--and not against.
