Voices of Diabetes

I believe you can say that I have learned to cope with diabetes, since I have been a well-controlled diabetic for over 59 years.

During this time period, I had to learn to cope with many changes through the years. At first, I dealt with actually boiling my urine over a burner to determine if my sugar was high. Next was boiling the urine by dropping a tablet into a test tube. How great it was when I passed a test strip through a urine stream.

There were no sugar-free drinks -- this was lots of coping for a child. Now that I am older, the coping is much easier. It is no problem to prick my finger several times daily and having an insulin pump makes life easy - with little or no coping - just almost normal living!
