Voices Of Diabetes

Voices of Diabetes

Six months ago, I became diabetic after receiving a liver transplant. With all of the events that were occurring with the transplant, having to take insulin injections was just another part of the treatment and road to recovery. Now, I manage my diabetes as I do my transplant anti-rejection medications and keep careful records.

My transplant team supplied me with a kit that contained a plastic medication dispenser that helps me keep track of my medications. Then the certified diabetes educator came to my room with instructions on the use of a meter and the nutritionist with dietary information.

I must admit, that it was almost overwhelming at first. After about a month at home, my wife and I signed up for a diabetes training class at the local hospital. It was very helpful and we learned even more on how to cope and manage my diabetes.

Thinking back, coping with this new diagnosis of diabetes requires a full team approach, with me as the coach, player and cheerleader. Thank you for this opportunity to share.
