Voices of Diabetes

In my life I have always been hard-headed and never settled for doing things the easy way. The same was true when it came to my diabetes. I found out the hard way. I went into a coma with a blood sugar of 2050.

Yes, that's right, 2050, and this is not a typo. I was in a coma for 8 days and coded out twice. My family was told that I probably would not survive. But here I am over 12 years later. My biggest problem is control. My blood sugar (glucose) rises very quickly. When I "go high" it is generally 600+. I have been on several different medications, but control is still a problem.

I count carbs and calories. I try so hard to keep my blood sugar under control, but it is an uphill battle. My doctor once told me that my blood sugars were like a balloon.  The first time you have a hard time blowing it up, but after that it is easy to blow the balloon up again. Everyone has advised me on different ways to control my blood sugars, but it is a day to day struggle. But I am lucky that I have a great support team and with their help I know I can make it.
