Voices of Diabetes

I don't work but I believe that coping with diabetes at school/college can be just as challenging. I attend a local university. I am registered in the disability services office which helps with problems I might encounter with professors by providing notes to them concerning the diabetes and my asthma.

I carry my meter and snacks to school. I try to get a regular lunch break built into my schedule each semester, but sometimes that's hard to do. Last semester, I couldn't get the lunch break worked out with the way classes I needed were offered. I worked with disability services and my professors, who permitted me to carry food to classes and eat when necessary. The other students are watchful if they know what's going on.

My tip: One or two people at either work or school need to know about your diabetes and how to treat blood sugar (glucose) highs and lows. With care, anyone can manage diabetes anywhere.

Take care, everyone.
