I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 years ago now. I have had my ups and downs. I remember so well how I fought going on any meds. Then when I found out I had kidney disease 2 months later, I had to go off the meds because of the kidneys. I fought going on insulin. I have always had wonderful willpower, so again I thought I could do this alone. I was wrong!!!! Do not fight this!!! Do what you have to do and take care of yourself. Do not worry about what other people think. This is your body, and no one else’s.
I feel better today and my kidney function has even improved. I follow my diet quite rigorously, although there have been times I have cheated. I do not allow myself to go on a guilt trip if that happens. I just readjust my insulin needs and get on with it. I follow my carb diet, proteins and fats every day.
Take the bull by the horns and just think of this diabetic lifestyle as a game. You are in it to win—to play it through and not quit. You may lose for one meal, but then you are right back on track. I hear people say they can no longer go out and enjoy a meal. Baloney!! That is the furthest thing from the truth. It is just picking and choosing what is right. Have a soda, but make it a diet soda.
Many years ago, my poor mother-in-law had type 2 diabetes. She lost her eyesight and her leg due to the diabetes. This is no longer necessary. Advances in medicine have come such a long way and I am happy that diabetes came my way today, versus 30 years ago. Just think, they did not even have sugarless treats like today. No diet soda. So, my advice to anyone feeling down is "just lighten up.” Things will get better. Thank God for what you have. Not for what you think you have lost. C'mon. Get up now, and get that butt into gear. My love and best wishes to all!
