Voices of Diabetes

My son is 12 years old and has been diabetic for 2-1/2 years now. He has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), also. He still has problems understanding that he cannot hide foods that he eats and that he has to put all the carbs into his pump.

I went into my son's room one day when he was not home. I found an entire grocery sack full of candy wrappers. The wrappers were hidden under his pillow, under the bed, and in places that were not easy to get to. Now I know why his blood sugar (glucose) has been sooooo high!

I asked him why he had been hiding them. Of course, he said he did not know. I told him that he has to put the carbs in and that not doing it was going to hurt him. How do I get him to understand that what he has been doing is going to hurt him? We have been through the education classes, we have been to the local support groups (which were really just for the high school students to get out of class), we have talked to our doctors, and we have even gone to a psychiatrist. Where have I gone wrong? What do I do next to get him to understand?
