My Name is Peggy, and I've dealt with diabetes for over
53 years. I'm here to tell you that you can have a rich and fulfilling life
even if you are diabetic.
I can't remember not having diabetes. I was diagnosed
when I was 3-1/2 years old. At that time, diabetes management was much more
difficult because glass syringes were used, and you had to boil them every day
so you could take insulin. When I first
was diagnosed with it, one of my parents would hold me down while the other
would administer the insulin injection.
A 3 year old doesn't understand that it's the only way to keep her
alive. She just hates the shots.
I went through the usual "teenage" rebellion
back in the "hippie" days and came close to killing myself due to the
irresponsible lifestyle. Finally, in my
twenties, I realized I had to take care of me, because there was no one else to
do it.
Since that time, I've had a fantastic life. I've had the opportunity to spend time
overseas doing missionary work. I've
traveled all over the USA
and can tell you that life is great, if you're willing to take a little time to
keep track of your condition.
In this day and age, with all the support and a variety
of foods, it's easy being diabetic. My
A1C runs between 6.5% and 6.8%. I've been using a pump for about 10 years.
I plan on being around for at least another 40
years. All I can say is, don't give up
or give in. You're living in the best time you can, so enjoy life and be glad
you're alive!
