Voices of Diabetes

I recently went to see my healthcare provider. I was there to get my results from my recent lab tests. To my surprise, my doctor told me that my blood sugar level was high at the time of the testing and that my A1C level was also high.

I have been struggling with my diabetes since 1994 and was put on every type of medication in pill form that was possible. I tried different combinations with no favorable results.

Then my doctor told me it was time for a change. I had to start taking insulin injections. At this point, I just started crying and my doctor asked what was wrong. I told her at this point that I felt that I was a failure. She then explained to me that I indeed had not failed and explained that my type 2 diabetes was just progressing to a stage where pills were not working and insulin was needed to help control my blood sugar levels.

Upon hearing this, I started to feel better and she also reminded me that I am not alone in this fight. My whole diabetes care team is standing right there giving me encouragement as well as my family and friends.
