Voices of Diabetes

I have had type 1 diabetes since Christmas Eve 1994. That is a day I will never forget, but that's not my story today.

I wanted to let everyone know how important it is to have a great support team. I am one of the lucky ones. I have my husband, who has held up his end of the bargain of "for better or for worse." I have my parents who seem to just sense when I am having problems and show up to help. Then there are my children. My children are 6, 3, and 1 years old.

I have a remarkable 6-year-old daughter who last year, when she was only 5 years, knew enough to call 911 and save my life when I passed out. She cared for her little brothers and was there for me. She was so scared and thought at first she did something wrong. She told me she tried to bring me a snack...I had every snack in the house surrounding me when I came to. She is amazing, and now that her brother is 3 years old, she is trying to teach him how to help mom in case I need help while she is at school.

As I said, I am one of the lucky ones. I have an amazing support team. I know that without them, I would not be a success story.
