Voices of Diabetes

Children don't like taking shots...but they love giving them!! Children don't like having their finger stuck...but they love sticking their mother's finger!

My children were in elementary school when I became insulin dependent. So my husband and all 3 children attended the diabetes management classes with me!

What a wonderful family project. The children not only learned great nutritional values, but they learned how to be aware of how diabetes affects a person.

Every one of us learned how to eat properly, exercise and how to monitor blood sugar (glucose). We also learned how to give insulin injections and how to read a sliding scale. How great for me! Any time I would be too hot or be too sleepy, they would start checking my sugar level! Then with adult supervision, the kids would almost "fight" over who got to give Mama her shot!!

What a great support team!  Sometimes a diabetic is not sure what is wrong or how much insulin to take. Always having someone close who knows how to monitor blood sugar is very reassuring.

Kudos to the Family Diabetes-Care Team!!
