Diabetes isn't easy to deal with when you are working 8
hours a day, 5 days a week, and on the go! I work in a doctor's office, and I
am the health educator there as well. I am constantly telling patients to count
carbohydrates and limit the carb count at each meal -- and because my endocrinologist
started me off on the real strict 30 carbs per meal, I am strict with my
patients.
That's quite a task when you are first starting out with
the diabetes diagnosis. You must carry your carbohydrate count list with you so
you can look at what you are eating. But you do find out you can eat quite a
lot of health foods. Skip the fast-food restaurants, though. You won't find it
there unless you go for the salads.
I have always been the "plain Jane" eating-type
person who didn't care for the fancy dishes when it came to cooking. So, I didn't have to do anything special for
myself when it came to changing eating habits. It's just keeping myself from
eating the treats that come in from outside sales reps, or the chocolate or
other things that come into the office. But if I'm prepared with fresh fruits
and vegetables, I can pretty much avoid the junk foods.
I have plenty of resource books here for the patients, as
well as for my own knowledge, and just keep reminding myself that I can keep up
with my successes -- even if I have a day when I fail. There's always a better
day coming up.
