I have never been one to exercise. I was very active in
high school and, as a result, had two knee surgeries. That made it really hard
— or so I thought — to exercise. I had a severe back injury in my early
twenties, and that has made it even more hard for me.
I was diagnosed with diabetes at my pre-natal workup
during my first pregnancy. I was immediately started on insulin — and again
with my second pregnancy. Then, I developed the disease to stay. I didn't
really have a lot of diabetes education and, therefore, didn't incorporate an
exercise program. I maintained good blood sugar (glucose) control through diet
and insulin. Little did I know how beneficial exercise could and would be.
Now, 17 years later, I know how important exercise is. I
am just having a difficult time getting started. My daughter and I recently
joined a club, and we go swimming every day. I want to start using the
treadmill and the stationary bikes, but I'm afraid I won't be able to do it
because of my back and, therefore, will be discouraged. I guess I need a lot of
encouragement. My daughter is wonderful and helps so much. I am counting on her
to help me through this.
If anyone has any advice or words of encouragement,
please send them my way. Thank you so much.
