Voices of Diabetes

I was diagnosed 2 years ago and since my diagnosis, getting through every day can be a challenge. First and foremost it is your attitude. You MUST keep it positive knowing that you can live a very healthy and productive life managing your diabetes. The trick is to do what your doctor says to do and TEST, TEST, TEST!!!

Keeping your blood glucose (sugar) level in check is the major factor in staying healthy. I was really blessed to have a very supportive husband and the rest of my family standing behind me. I have one son and I look forward to a future of having grandchildren. My goal is to stay healthy enough to enjoy spending time with them and being able to run and play with them. As long as my attitude is positive and I can stay focused I will meet that goal -- provided my son gives me grandchildren!

I inherited this disease from my father's side of the family and as I was growing up I knew eventually I would have it so my diagnosis was not surprising. I'm insulin dependent and was on oral medication until just recently, now just long acting insulin at bedtime and fast acting when needed.

It's not that bad -- just something you have to adjust to and learn to always plan ahead. "No more spontaneity" is the worst of if but you can still enjoy the best life has to offer. I know I will sure do my best! I wish you all much luck and success in managing your diabetes.
