My name is Rosemary, and I was diagnosed with diabetes 4
months ago. My mom was diagnosed about 3 years ago, and I remember telling her
to just watch what she eats and try to exercise. She would tell me it wasn't
that easy.
Now that I'm dealing with it, I truly understand what she
meant. I've been blessed in the fact that I don't mind eating healthy, whereas
my mom was used to eating many Spanish dishes, being that we are of Hispanic
origin.
I spent a week with my mom this past summer, and it was
truly good for the both of us. We did everything together--from preparing our
breakfast to our supper--and we learned we could have fun. We learned together
that we could de-stress, because we could be there for each other. When it came
time to check our blood, we would tell each other "it's time to do the
hokey pokey." Now, that I'm back home, I call her every day so that we can
talk about our day and share any concerns we may have.
My husband and grandchildren are so supportive. My
husband does the cooking at our home, and he is always thinking of my health.
My grandchildren always encourage me to eat right and when my blood sugar
(glucose) gets a little too high, they ask what I have eaten and tell me I'll
have to leave that alone.
Being around people who support and encourage you is
definitely a plus in helping with diabetes. I am so thankful God has placed
people around me to do just that.
